We offer Physics, Biology and Chemistry as A level subjects within this dynamic and contemporary curriculum area. These subjects are statistically amongst the hardest A-level subjects and we may make you take an aptitude test which we use along with your GCSE results to decide whether we will allow you to study them.
Physics is a key part of science, engineering and technology, explaining how and why things behave as they do. Although Physics is about practical things, it also seeks to explain questions spanning a vast scale, from the origin and evolution of the universe, to the sub-microscopic world of particles which form the building blocks of all materials and are responsible for the fundamental forces of nature. If you want to use your imagination, your practical ability and your creative flair, then Physics could be for you. If you are fascinated by the world about you and would like to understand more about it, or you are thinking about a career in engineering, medicine, computing, the environment, space or technology, then Physics is for you. If you have an enquiring mind, are adaptable, enjoy challenges, have strong mathematical ability and good powers of observation and if you can communicate your ideas clearly to others then Physics certainly is for you!
If you enjoy learning about the natural world, about how organisms interact and depend on each other in the environment, about how these organisms evolved then A level Biology is for you. If you enjoy learning about the human body, how the body works at a molecular and cellular level and how the information to build a human body is passed from generation to generation, Biology might be perfect for you. A level Biology is a multi-disciplinary subject which will provide opportunities and preparation for a wide range of careers and higher education courses primarily in related fields, for example medicine, biomedical sciences and the life sciences but also in a wide range of other disciplines. It is a course that requires the development of a wide range of skills. Whenever possible students are given hands on opportunities to develop their understanding of the subject through practical work and each year; second year students have the opportunity to take part in a week long residential trip to South Devon to study ecology with subject experts.
A-level Chemistry will be an adventure of creative, collaborative thinking and a ‘hands on’ practical experience! At Tallis we have a track record of excellent results in Chemistry, having attracted students from all over South East London during the past 10 years. The excellence stems from high quality first teaching and a strong commitment towards raising students’ awareness of the independent study skills that they will need to acquire to be successful. A level Chemistry involves a unique combination of problem solving and mathematical rigour. Students will learn about quantum mechanics (the mystery shrouding the atom!) and relate this to the properties of the elements in the periodic table, the life affirming chemistry of carbon (10 million compounds discovered!) and how to design industrial processes to take into account rate of reaction and equilibrium effects. There will also be the opportunity for students to use degree standard apparatus in new state of the art laboratories. A-level Chemistry provides progression onto degree programmes in medicine, dentistry, natural sciences, engineering and pharmacy.
At Tallis you will receive high quality teaching from professional scientists in top class laboratories who will facilitate your preferred pathways into tertiary education. In recent years our chemists have gone on to study natural sciences at Cambridge, engineering at Imperial and medicine at UCL. We have partnerships with universities such as UCL and Greenwich and have a rich history of extracurricular provision. We guarantee you an intellectually stimulating and rewarding experience enriched with the very best in post 16 practical science.
