NHS Learning Support Fund

In recent years students can apply for NHS LSF if they’re on one of the following pre-registration undergraduate courses:
  • dental therapy or dental hygiene (level 5 and 6 courses)
  • dietetics
  • midwifery
  • nursing (adult, child, mental health, learning disability, joint nursing, or social work)
  • occupational therapy
  • operating department practitioner

Foundation years are not eligible for NHS LSF.

From 1 September 2025, eligible new and continuing students studying undergraduate pharmacy or pre-registration healthcare science courses will be able to claim reimbursement towards practice placement expenses through the Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses (TDAE) element of NHS LSF.
They will not be eligible for any of the other NHS LSF allowances.

The LSF can entitle you to:
  • a training grant of £5,000 per academic year
  • parental support of £2,000, if you have at least one dependent child under 15 years, or under 17 years if registered with special educational needs
  • money back for excess travel and temporary accommodation costs (Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses) while you're on your practice placement
  • extra support for students experiencing financial hardship (Exceptional Support Fund)

On top of the Training Grant, you can get an extra £1,000 per academic year if you're studying:

  • mental health nursing
  • learning disability nursing
  • radiography (diagnostic and therapeutic)
  • prosthetics and orthotics
  • orthoptics and podiatry
If you are eligible for SSP, it will be added to your NHS Learning Support Fund (LSF) account when you apply for the Training Grant.
