Languages

An A-level in a language is unique in its interdisciplinarity, enabling you to explore elements of sociology, history, politics, history, statistics, geography, music, linguistics, film, literature - all in the language of the various cultures you study. It will broaden your horizons, open up new career paths, and increase your earning potential, all whilst enabling you to make deeper connections with other people around the world. The Individual Research Project also provides the opportunity to become an expert in a language area of your choice, enabling you to develop further skills and understanding for your future plans.

What makes a family? Is the internet good or bad for democracy? Who decides what is designated as “heritage”? Is cinema under threat? What is the purpose of prison? Should 16-year-olds be able to vote? What causes certain groups to be marginalised within society? These are all questions you will tackle as part of French A-level, which spans many contemporary topics pertaining to current societal and political trends and artistic culture. In addition, you will hone your skills as a linguist and cultural analyst by studying key French works: François Truffaut’s pioneering film Les 400 Coups, definitive for the Nouvelle Vague movement, and Kiffe Kiffe Demain by novelist Faïza Guène, which helped change the discourse around Beur literature.

The threads of the post-colonial world and the complexities of relationships of power are woven throughout the Spanish A Level, linking such diverse topics as regional identity and cultural heritage, the conflict between modern and traditional values, questions around equal rights, the nature of fame and modern day idols, the impact of the digital revolution on modern Spain, dictatorships and monarchies, political movements and multiculturalism. Studying Joshua Marston’s remarkable 2005 film María, llena eres de gracia and the playwright Federico Garcia Lorca’s 1936 masterpiece La Casa de Bernada Alba challenges your language as well as your critical skills, and deepens your understanding of different eras and places in the Hispanic World.
